The US Airforce trains using AR Technology
In a groundbreaking move, the U.S. Air Force has embraced augmented reality (AR) technology to revolutionize its helicopter pilot training program, a development showcased in the latest episode of Weapons and Warfare. This innovative training method allows airmen to engage in hands-on learning experiences, interacting with virtual switches and gauges within a simulated environment mirroring the TH-1H Huey helicopter.
Experts highlight numerous advantages of this AR training approach, emphasizing its ability to closely replicate real-world working conditions. Dennis Wikoff, President and COO of Vertex Solutions, underscores the effectiveness of this training method in providing exceptional learning opportunities for personnel.
Major Paul Ferris, an Air Force helicopter pilot, explains the diverse applications of AR training, ranging from instrument education to emergency simulations. He envisions a future where interconnected devices will furnish pilots with mission-critical information seamlessly.
The compact nature of the AR training system offers logistical and financial benefits over traditional motion simulators, resulting in expedited graduation timelines for student pilots. In fact, one class graduated six weeks ahead of schedule due to the efficiency of this training method, as reported by Air Force Times in 2019.
At the heart of this AR training system is its multiplayer mixed reality trainer, integrating tactile feedback with virtual environments. Pilots don head-mounted displays to immerse themselves in mixed- and virtual-reality scenarios while retaining physical controls for crucial manoeuvres.
In response to the evolving landscape of aviation training, the Air Force revised its helicopter training program in 2021, eliminating the prerequisite for fixed-wing instruction. This shift allows pilots to focus exclusively on mastering the fundamental skills necessary for helicopter operation, enhancing training efficiency.
