Meta Expands Smart Glasses Lineup with Oakley and Hypernova
The success of Meta’s collaboration with Ray-Ban on smart glasses has paved the way for further innovations, and now the company has several exciting developments in the pipeline. Meta is set to introduce a new pair of smart glasses designed specifically for athletes and active individuals, this time in partnership with Oakley.
Additionally, Meta is working on a more advanced version of its smart glasses, known as ‘Hypernova.’ This upcoming model is expected to offer enhanced features and capabilities compared to previous releases, though it will launch at a later date.
Meta Partners with Oakley for Athlete-Focused Smart Glasses
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Meta has ambitious plans for its wearable technology, with two new models in development. Meta’s collaboration with the Luxottica Group led to the successful launch of the Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses in 2023, under the project codename ‘Supernova.’ Now, the company is preparing to release ‘Supernova 2,’ in collaboration with Oakley, a brand known for its rugged and outdoor-focused products.
Supernova 2 will cater to athletes, particularly cyclists, and will be based on Oakley’s Sphaera glasses. These smart glasses will incorporate a central frame-mounted camera, providing users with hands-free capabilities while engaging in sports and outdoor activities.
Hypernova' Smart Glasses: A Step Towards True A
Following the Supernova series, Meta is developing a new iteration of smart glasses under the codename ‘Hypernova.’ According to Gurman, this model will bring Meta closer to achieving “true” augmented reality glasses, offering significant technological advancements. Reports suggest that Hypernova will come with a price tag of around $1,000 and will deliver a more immersive AR experience.
Meta's Journey Towards True AR Glasses
The development of genuine AR glasses, with a design comparable to everyday eyewear, remains a highly anticipated goal for tech companies. Meta is making strides in this direction with its ‘Orion’ project, which aims to produce AR glasses that resemble traditional eyewear rather than a bulky headset. Leaks indicate that a prototype was showcased last year, though Meta has yet to make an official announcement.
While Meta has previously introduced augmented reality features through its Quest 3 headset, which blends AR and VR into a mixed reality experience, the company aims to bring standalone AR glasses to market. Project Orion, which was teased during the Meta Connect event, is rumored to be slated for a 2027 release.
In the meantime, Meta’s upcoming smart glasses—one developed in partnership with Oakley and the other under the codename Hypernova—are expected to provide users with innovative wearable technology that enhances their daily lives.
